Aggregates & Quarry Materials
There are different types of aggregates and quarry materials, each with a specific application. These products are sold under various names including pea gravel, shot rock, crushed shell rock etc., but they all fit into a few categories that are classified according to the size of the rocks.
One of the common uses for rock and stone is controlling irrigation and water erosion. For this function, the material most often used is #4 Stone, which is composed of pieces ranging from 3/4" to 2" in size. Pieces this large do not move easily, and tend to stay in place even in heavy rain. For this reason, #4 Stone is the best choice for locations with water such as irrigation channels and drainage areas, or for backfilling retaining walls.
#5 Stone is also good for irrigation as well as septic and utility applications. It is composed of pieces in the 1/2" to 1 1/2" size range. These smaller pieces tend to pack a little closer, and still have enough weight to stay put in rainy conditions.
Aggregates and quarry products are often seen on roads and drives as well as spillways, pipe bedding, etc. For this, a popular choice is #57 Commercial FDOT or commercial. Other applications include use as a top dressing and as a base for retaining walls.
For use in asphalt and concrete redi-mix, a good choice is #89 Commercial or FDOT S1B. The pieces of rock are smaller than those in #57, so they tend to pack closer and form a dense layer that is perfect for bedding and driveways.
Also good for asphalt and concrete as well as drainage is #67 Stone FDOTS-1-A Stone. This type is at the lower end of the size scale and is also used for driveways or other locations where a dense, firm surface is needed.
In addition to these smaller sizes, there is the larger size known as ballast rock or drainage rock. These pieces are heavy and work very well as a stabilizer or in parking areas, spillways, crossings and pipelines.
