Topsoil Explained
Topsoil, what is it ? Where is it found and what is it’s purpose? Top soil is basically the upper layer of dirt found on the earth’s surface, and can range in thickness between two to eight inches. Topsoil plays an important role in sustaining plant life, as essential nutrients are drawn through roots imbedded in this upper layer of soil. Top soil also has an indirect role in actually stabilizing itself and preventing erosion, by developing rich vegetation. Topsoil erosion is a major environmental concern, generally caused by flooding and storm water runoff. Topsoil erosion can have a devastating impact economically, as the effects can damage valuable farm land used to produce crops . Soil erosion can also have detrimental affect on natural Eco systems. Topsoil can differ in nutrient content, texture and color from region to region, yet are all of equal importance and play a vital role in the environment. Topsoil is also sold commercially, and can be used for a variety of purposes including ball fields, golf courses and home gardens. |
